Political parties' registration commission is dissatisfied with widespread violence and intolerance perpetrated by both the governing All Peoples Congress and the opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party.
PPRC's acting chairman Roland Ade Caesar told journalists in Freetown that intolerable acts of violence undermine the principles of democracy and good governance, noting that it would eventually destroy the country's good image.
He said following recent violent acts after the 2008 local council elections, his commission embarked on a nationwide conflict resolution and mediation forum covering the 14 electoral districts.
"The outcome of the conflict resolution and mediation forum implies that political parties agree to be tolerant and adherent to the provisions of the code of conduct, the electoral laws act of 2002 and the 1991 constitution," he said.
Caesar said at the forum representatives from political parties recommended that the commission should impose fines or deregistered parties who breached the code of conduct.
"At the end of the meeting it came out clearly that much need to be done if Sierra Leone is to achieve total peace and stability," he said.
The commission's registrar Mohamed Kemoh Mansaray said paramount chiefs also agreed that they were taking sides.
"Paramount chiefs are forcing their people to support the APC government. According to the commission's act, paramount chiefs should refrain from political interference and intimidation," he said.
