Uganda: KCC Closes Over 28 Butcheries

THE exercise of closing down substandard butcheries in the city ended yesterday with many butcheries closed. By Wednesday, 28 butcheries in Kabalagala, Makindye, Kasanga and Katwe, all in Makindye division had been closed.

The owners were ordered to remain closed until they meet the required standards.

Makindye Division environmental officer, Dr. Johnson Kasigare, said standards include wearing a white headgear and an apron, a clean environment with chopping boards, free of dust and flies.

The crackdown was ordered by KCC acting town clerk, Ruth Kijjambu.

Kasigare added that a standard butchery should have a meat store, service counter and a greased meat section. Hygiene is also important.

However, some butchers, who were tipped off by their colleagues, closed and took off before KCC arrived.
