Mr. Census Ekpu, Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, has called on the Federal Government to recognise environmental degradations caused by oil spillage thereby using ecological fund to find lasting solutions to them.

He disclosed this when he led a delegation to the Minister of Environment, Housing and Urban Development, Mrs Halima Tayo Alao, recently in Abuja.

Mr Ekpu said he was inspired by the ministry's efforts to address environment challenges and also commended the federal government for awarding contracts for drainage construction and erosion, adding that his visit was to solicit the ministry's assistance to tackle the state's environmental problems.

He said states have identified funds as a major impediment against the tackling of ecological problems in the country.

While reacting, Alao said that states find it very difficult to respond to environment issues and as a result, the ministry has expressed readiness to assist state governments to tackle the problems.

"Government alone cannot shoulder the entire responsibility of environmental challenges facing states hence the allocation of part of the funds to state governments", she said.

She assured that the federal government, through the ministry, will always assist when such cases are beyond the states.
