Nigeria: KNSG Distributes 22,000 Mt of Fertiliser

A total of 22,098.60 metric of assorted fertilizer have been distributed to farmers in Kano State for the 2008 rainy season, just as 12,196.95 metric tonnes of the commodity will be reserved for the 2008/2009 dry season farming.
Speaking at a press briefing Thursday, the state commissioner for agriculture and natural resources, Alhaji Musa Sulaiman Shanono explained further that out of the 17,328 tonnes, the ministry received 13,186.5 from four indigenous contractors.
Alhaji Musa added that in addition to the 17,328 ordered, the ministry also procured 16,967.55 metric tonnes through the federal ministry of Agriculture and Water resources, hence, making the total quantity procured by the state to 30,154.05 metric tonnes.
He noted that out of the total quantity of the commodity received 22,098.60 was received and distributed to various categories of farmers, with 4,141.5 tones still pending.
Alhaji Musa added that the pending 4,141.5 and the balance of 8,055.45mt would be reserved for dry season farming.
He stated that 8,750 tonnes was allocated to the Kano state Agricultural Resources and Development Agency (KNARDA) Small-Holder Farmers Association, while the total of 4,332.75 tonnes of the commodity was allocated to farmers participating in the state Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources Industrial Crops Programme.
Other recipients of the commodity, he said were large scale farmers who received 1,301.7 metric tones, Tsan-gaya programme 790 tonnes, IITA/KNARDA Cowpea farmers programme 100 tonnes, MANR irrigation farmers 735.5 tones.
The commissioner also said that while a total of 339.7 tonnes was allocated to farmers participating in the government seed multiplication programme, the total of 5,748.95 tones of the commodity was distributed to groups and individuals, who do not fall in any of the above categories.
Alhaji Musa further explained that institutions that are training future specialists in agriculture such as the Audu Bako School of Agriculture, faculties of Agriculture of Bayero University and the Kano state University of Science and Technology, Wudil have also benefited form the distribution exercise.
Owing to the priority accorded to the agricultural sector by the present administration in Kano ,he said, the annual crops production in the state has tremendously increased from 1.9 million tonnes in 2003 to 4.0 million tonnes in 2007.
