AMNESTY International Zimbabwe (AIZ) is set to host an arts festival that will advocate for an end to violence against women and girls.
However, festival organisers are battling for a police clearance -- more than two weeks after they notified the police. Police are demanding more details that range from the guest list to the purpose of the event.
Colin Zilala, executive producer of AIZ, said they were waiting for the clearance and he was confident that it would be granted.
"Today (Thursday) I will give police extra details after which I hope to get a good response that will allow this noble festival to take place and give the message to women and children abusers," Zilala said.
The festival, to be held at Tafara Hall on September 20, will run under the theme Stop Violence Against Women and Girls campaign and is going to raise issues contained in the Domestic Violence Act, which was passed into law in 2007. Various activities that include drama, music, poetry, theatre and dance have been lined up to provide entertainment for the day.
From Karoi, Baptism Of Fire Theatre Company will perform alongside Eastern Art Ensemble from Mutare, Pisa Pisa from Masvingo and other groups from Hwange, Harare and Bulawayo.
Dance troupe Amavithikazi and Lwazi Tshabangu will sing and dance against violence and abuse of women and children. Shingisai Suluma is likely to be the guest speaker against the backdrop of her work as an ambassador of Unicef.
Zilala said: "We are going to start with a procession to the hall from Tafara Post Office at 9AM, led by a band from Churchill High School and drum majorettes from Mabvuku High School. Then artists from all over the country will perform."
AIZ is a national movement of people who campaign for internationally recognised human rights.
