Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, the Etsu Nupe, yesterday called on Nigerians to assist widows and orphans, saying that this would go a long way in reducing the suffering in the society.

Abubakar, who made the call in Bida at a Dabur ceremony, said Nigerians should desist from maltreating widows and orphans.

He said some people were very hostile and unsympathetic to the plight of widows and orphans.

"I advice people with such tendencies to change their ways and show sympathy and love to widows, orphans and other underprivileged persons in the society," he said.

He said many widows and orphans had been driven away from their homes, and their property unlawfully taken way from them by privileged members of their husband's families.

"It is indeed sad and pathetic that some so called educated people are among those perpetrating these acts of irresponsibility and wickedness," he said.
