Dorfschulprojekt, a non-profit organisation registered in Hanau, Germany, has donated school materials to pupils of Akumalam Village in Mankon, Northwest Province.

The beneficiaries of the materials included pupils of Presbyterian School, PS Akumalam, and other children in and around the village. The gifts included school uniforms, books, pens, pencils, benches and sports equipment.

The donation programme, which began September 29, will culminate on October 8 in a sports tournament involving Step by Step Nursery and Primary School Ntarikon, Catholic School Ntaturu and Presbyterian School Akumalam.

The Coordinator of the project, Dr. Anye Chifen, said the objective was to support poor kids especially orphans in and around Akumalam village.Dr. Anye said he grew up in Akumalam in the 1980s and understands very well the plight of the children there.

He said the project also involves the payment of fees to some schools. On their part, Maider Nunez and Akihiro Sato, members of Dorfschulprojekt, said the children of Akumalam will also benefit from a Dental Care Initiative.

The initiative, they said, is to awaken the kids and parents about dental care and prevention by donating tooth brushes to all pupils in Akumalam.According to Dr. Anye, the motivation to donate tooth brushes was the result of a study carried out in the 2007/2008 academic year.
