At least 280 families from Bujenje County in Masindi are embroiled in a row with NRM Chief Whip, Ms Kabakumba Masiko, over 200 acres of land.

The district chairperson, Mr Steven Birija, said his office had received several petitions from residents of Ikoba, Bujenje and Bihanga villages who fear that Ms Masiko is about to evict them from the land which she claims to own.

The residents say they have lived on the contested land for more than 10 years.

"The minister has reportedly already issued them with eviction notices," Mr Birija said. Ms Kabakumba is said to have stopped all tenants on the land from constructing permanent houses and growing perennial crops.

Ms Kabakumba however said she legally owns the land on which the frightened residents live as squatters.

She said she bought the land from the custodian board.

She has reportedly encouraged them to buy the land from her at a customer friendly price.

"I do not intend to evict them as alleged," Ms Kabakumba told the Daily Monitor in a telephone interview on Saturday.

The minister said she is helping them to acquire the land instead.
