Statistics provided by doctors and County officials have confirmed that at least 33 persons from various localities in Bomi County have regained their sight through a voluntary optical surgery service provided by Mercy Ship.

The 33 persons attributed their visual impairment to communicable diseases in their environments.

At a thanksgiving program in appreciation to Mercy Ship, the city mayor of Tubmanburg, Bomi County, Mr. Gballey Karnley said the restoration of sight to anyone is a glorious opportunity.

"Can you imagine if you only closed your eyes for just one minute , you'll feel that you have lost something. Imagine being blind without a chance of seeing again, and all of a sudden someone comes and say I will cure (restore your sight), can you imagine that? We say thanks to Mercy Ship," Tubmanburg City Mayor extolled.

According to an official of the local branch of the Christian Association of the Blind, about 275 blind people have been identified within Tubmanburg, but could not get optical surgery services due to the lack of money to pay for the services. Many of them survive on street begging.

On behalf of Mercy Ship, Madam Naomi Gillette said the assistance was made possible through the intervention of Bomi County Senator Richard B. Divine.

She said their services are purely humanitarian and has no boundaries.

Madam Gillette said Mercy Ship is expected to leave Liberia in December for another African country.
