THE deputy speaker of parliament, Rebecca Kadaga, has hailed non-governmental organisations for their role in agricultural development.

Speaking at a ceremony to mark 20 years of Send-A-Cow Uganda (SACU) recently, Kadaga said these organisations needed to be funded because they contributed to achievement of the Government's prosperity-for-all programme. "There was a debate in Parliament on whether farmers can benefit from this programme.

But my recent visits to SACU beneficiaries in Kamuli district have shown that it's possible," she said.

Musa Banerya and Medina Nantale, from Budoma village, Iganga district said SACU had changed their lives.

"Since SACU's intervention, our socio-economic standing has improved," said Nantale.

Kadaga said it was possible for farmers to earn up to sh20m a year. She appealed to the agriculture ministry to provide farmers with oxen and ploughs to supplement the tractors recently given to various sub-counties to increase production.
