From October 7 to 9, 2008, Zitouna University will host an international conference on "interfaith conviviality and international cultural challenges".
The conference which is organized jointly by the Tunis Higher Theology Institute and the German Foundation "Konrad Adenauer", will gather a number of scholars and men of faith from Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco, Jordan, Lebanon, France, Italy and Germany.
Among the issues to be discussed are the role of religions in setting up relations based on concord, dialogue and respect of differences, as well as diversity between civilizations, religions and cultures and the attitudes of Islam and Christianity on the values of religious freedom. Contemporary international cultural challenges will also be evoked.
In an address read in his name by Mr Ridha Methnani, Head of Cabinet, the Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Technology, Mr Lazhar Bououni, said that modern Tunisia at the behest of President Ben Ali had promoted dialogue of civilizations and religions as well as openness to other cultures, as a tenet of its policy.
Among the measures taken to enshrine this policy were the rehabilitation of the Zitouna University, the setting up in November 2001 of the Ben Ali Chair for the Dialogue of Civilizations and Religions (see photograph of the logo) and the creation of an international Presidential Prize for Islamic Studies, he added.
Interfaith dialogue, he said" has become an imperious necessity to promote development and oppose terrorism and extremism which are a threat to nations".
