CARITAS Uganda has hit back at the disaster preparedness minister for accusing the organisation of feeding the Lord's Resistance Army rebels, hence delaying the signing of the final peace accord.

Prof. Tarsis Kabwegyere, speaking last month at a cluster munitions conference in Kampala, accused Christian organisations like Caritas of giving the rebels a life-line.

"Caritas should stop giving food to the rebels so that they get under pressure to sign the peace agreement," he said.

However, Caritas, a social pastoral arm of the Catholic Church, said the contract to supply food and medicine to the rebels at their assembly point in Ri-Kwangba ended when the signing of the peace deal flopped in April.

Caritas' director, Francis Ndamira, said they worked in consultation with Dr Ruhakana Rugunda, the chief government negotiator at the talks.
