No fewer than 23 intending pilgrims from Niger State have been screened out by the state Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board.

The Chairman of the Board, Alh. Isa Ndagiman, who disclosed this in a press briefing in Minna yesterday, said those affected were screened out because of pregnancy and old age. Ndagiman explained that this was in conformity with the resolve of the board to ensure that only those who were qualified performed this year's pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. He stated that the screening exercise was thorough, as it involved both physical and spiritual examination.

According to him, the airlift of intending pilgrims would commence on November 4, 2008 from the Minna International Airport. The chairman revealed that about 5,000 pilgrims were expected to perform this year's pilgrimage from the state. Ndagiman said though 4,300 seats were approved for the state by the National Hajj Commission, efforts were being made to ensure that the seats were increased to 5,000. He denied the rumour that some intending pilgrims from the state would be prevented from performing the exercise. According to him, all those that had paid for the pilgrimage and had passed the screening exercise would be airlifted.

The chairman disclosed that Meridian Airline would airlift all intending pilgrims from the state. Ndagiman assured all intending pilgrims of adequate accommodation arrangement and other logistics in the holy land.
