Botswana has been ranked third in a list of 10 top countries with the least risk for resource sector investment.

The ranking has been done by leading resources publication, 'RESOURCESTOCKS' 2008 World Risk Survey.

The survey covered 74 countries in the world with Botswana and Namibia as the only African nations in the top 10. Other African nations that did well in the survey include Ghana, Malawi and Madagascar, while Somalia, Sierra Leone, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria and Burundi fared badly.

Finland was ranked first followed by Canada and Botswana and Australia. The Northern Territory, New South Wales and Tasmania were fifth, sixth and seventh. United States was eighth followed by Sweden. First-time participant, United Kingdom came in 14th.

"This year's survey, being the 16th year, had been broadened to better identify global conditions," Resources Stocks editor Ron Berryman said. The survey was first conducted in 1992 and distributed to more than 3,000 senior mining and oil and gas industry executives worldwide. The survey canvassed company executives to rate various countries across 10 categories of risk. These include sovereign risk, civil unrest, natural disasters and labour relations with investment risk rating of zero being no risk and five being maximum risk.

The survey revealed that Southeast Asian countries rated poorly overall where red tape was concerned, while African countries suffered because of poor infrastructure, red tape and sovereign risk issues.

The survey, distributed annually to the international and Australian resources sector, was sponsored by the Chubb Group of Insurance Companies and used extensively by the resources industry to assess potential risks.
