An NGO, Access to Justice, has described as unfortunate, Monday's attack on Justice Roland Amaize, Chairman of Edo Local Government Election Appeal Tribunal.

It called for the provision of adequate security around judicial officers, particularly those presiding over volatile political disputes.

The organisation's position was contained in a statement issued in Lagos on Wednesday by its Executive Director, Mr Chuma Otteh, and made available to newsmen.

Amaize was reported to have on August 1, 2008, delivered a judgement which ousted three local government council bosses.

The official residence of the high court judge in the state was reported to have been rocked by an explosion on Monday.

"Access to Justice condemns this attack in the strongest terms, and views this not only as an attack on the Judiciary, but on democracy in Nigeria .

"The security, both of the lives, properties and families, of judicial officers should be adequately guaranteed in accordance with the United Nations Basic Principles on the Independence of the Judiciary," it stated.

According to the organisation, judicial officers should be afforded the best protection possible, particularly when they have special assignments.

"Unless we guarantee the insulation of judicial officers from external pressure and personal threats, we cannot get the judiciary functioning at optimum capacity," it said.
