GOVERNOR Oserhiemen Osunbor of Edo State, yesterday, reacted to the claim by the governorship candidate of the Action Congress (AC), Comrade Adams Oshiomohle, that the people of the state are suffering the problems of flooding and erosion because of the alleged failure of the state government to construct drainage systems and gutters before embarking on road construction.
"I wish Oshiomohle had the voice to be saying all this when his friend (Lucky Igbinedion) was Governor of Edo State.
We know that when his friend was governor, he was cruising the oceans of the world in the most expensive luxury boats along with his friend, who failed to do what he is asking me to do," Gov. Osunbor told Vanguard in Benin.
"The same man, who sponsored his election as Governor of Edo State is the same man, whose neglect of the state I have inherited and I am trying to restore.
The first thing I embarked upon as Governor of Edo State was to clean up the drains that have been neglected for the past eight years or more to the extent that you will not even notice that gutters and drains use to exist in some of these places because they all blocked.
"We started to dig them up. When we were doing that, our critics, like Oshiomohle said we were wasting time pumping money into gutters, but I knew that the first thing to do was to open up the drains and construct new drains.
We were criticised for doing what Oshiomohle has now realised more than a year later that it is essential to be done. He did not think of it, all he has been talking about is human capital development in Edo State.
"He has never talked about clearing the drains, construction of drains till he saw us doing it. He is plagiarising us.
This problem of flooding has been exacerbated because of the non-performance of contractors in the last administration. We did not want to track them down when I came on board because they will say we are victimising some body."
But what we should all know that the havoc caused by flood this year is not as much as what the people of the state experienced in the last eight years" he said.
The Governor said however that " I went round to sympathize with all those who were affected during the a week before Oshiomohle embarked on his dramatic tour. I went to victims quietly and no body heard of it.
We gave assistance to most of them also. My joy is that the people of Edo state knows that we are working seriously in that regard and by the special grace of God we will not experience flooding after two years of this administration".
