Uganda: Law School Dismisses 80 Students

THE Law Development Centre has dismissed over 80 students who failed their exams in the last academic year.
The Centre's management committee on Wednesday decided that the affected students would not be re-admitted this academic year which started at the end of September.
In the past, students who failed or pulled out of the course would be re-admitted the following year.
The institution is the only one that admits graduate lawyers to study for diplomas in legal practice, commonly known as the bar course.
The Law Development Centre is reportedly overwhelmed by the increasing number of applicants from various universities.
Two senior lecturers at the centre, Nester Byamugisha and Michael Akampurira had previously called for an investigation into the high failure rate as well as a probe into examination malpractice.
In August, an examination was cancelled an hour after it had started. The authorities said the exam paper had leaked. An investigation was launched into the incident, whose report is yet to be submitted.
