VIOLENCE again erupted Thursday night in Abeokuta , the Ogun State capital as some members of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), were alleged to have killed six persons.

Residents of the area said that six people were shot dead by the OPC members who went away with five bodies while the body of one Adekunle Joseph Ogunseye, who was shot in the eye was recovered.

One of the assailants, Anifowose Yakubu, was reported to have been arrested with a sophisticated weapon by some policemen who raced to the scene.

Details of the incident were still sketchy yesterday evening, but Saturday Vanguard learnt that an unidentified woman hired some OPC members to help her recover some un unspecified amount of money from a neighbour which was said to have led to the violence.

An eye witness account said that the incident happened around 8.30pm throwing the whole area into pandemonium.

The alleged leader of the gang was said to have been arrested while trying to make good his escape from the angry mob and was said to have sustained injuries but was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Anifowose, Saturday Vanguard learnt was chained to his bed at the emergency unit of the hospital under the surveillance of some men in mufti but suspected to be policemen.

Controversy, however, seems to have been the lot of the unfortunate incident as another version of the story was said to have been caused by the refusal of one of the Yahoo Yahoo boys, who were said to have just made a "hit", to settle the local OPC guys.

When contacted the State coordinator of the OPC, Mr. Olu Fayemi, confirmed the incident, which he described as unfortunate and said that anybody found culpable would be brought to book.

"We did not send anyone to do this. We are expected to 'separate people' (broker peace) if they are at loggerheads; not to take sides in a case like that. I don't have the power to arrest anyone but we will invite the police to look into the case and ensure that those who are found guilty are punished."

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer ,Sunday Ubua, could not confirm the story as he promised to get back to newsmen but as at the time of filing this report no confirmation has been received from him.
