A female broadcaster with Ebonyi State Broadcasting Service (EBBS) Mrs. Ugochi Okoroafor, who also is a wife to an Ebonyi State popular disc jockey, Johnny Okoroafor has been kidnapped by unknown gunmen.

The incident which took place on Wednesday night at about 10pm was kept secret because negotiation has been on with the kidnappers to secure her release based on her pregnant condition.

A family said Ugochi is due to deliver in less than one month.

The hoodlums, the family source maintained, initially demanded for N10 million but as at Friday has reduced the ransom to N2 million.

Ugochi, the news caster was kidnapped by unknown gunmen at her residence along Nkaliki road in Abakaliki metropolis.

The hoodlums were said to have stormed her residence at about 10pm and carted away some valuables. "They took the woman along with them in her own Golf car, abandoning the car along Nkaliki road while the car's headlights were on when the car was recovered," the source narrated.

When contacted, husband to the victim Mr. Johnny Okoroafor, popularly called Soul to Soul also a newscaster in EBBS, said that some men stormed his house at about 10pm and quietly searched his house and took some valuables and also took his wife away.

According to him, "they drove my wife away with her own car and later the Golf car was recovered along Nkaliki road with doors open, lights on but she was not there. It was later in the morning that I received a phone call.

"When I picked the call it was my wife's voice and later a male voice told me that my wife is alive and will be released when I might have paid the sum of N10 million, I told them that I don't have such money. Up till now they have not released her".

The Ebonyi state police public relations officer Mr. Chris Anyanwu who confirmed the incident said that police has swung into action and bent to apprehend the kidnappers.

It could be recalled that the state radio station, EBBS has remained in crisis since July when an assassination attempt was made on two staff of the radio. The General Manger of the station, Nwafor Odom was thereafter remanded in Prison custody together with a female presenter but were recently released.
