NIPOST has declared that postal services are still alive and even more relevant now than ever, as the craze for e-mail and internet services has not replaced it, but rather created more opportunities for it to operate.
Speaking at the celebration of the 2008 World Postal Day, the Bauchi area postal manager, Abdurrahman Habib said Nigerians lived at a time when the different means of communication complement one another and the postal sector provided services, not only to anyone who buys or sells on-line, but also to people not yet able to make full use of the new technologies and for whom the mail is a vital link to the outside world.
He, however, said that with the growing international and inter-regional trade, the development gap between postal services around the world needed to be narrowed so that business and individuals could benefit from them by adopting a new world postal strategy because, according to him, the world of business environment calls for specific goals for the postal service sector to better position itself in an environment characterised by stiffer competition.
"The roadmap adopted by the UPU encourages operators to provide a faster, more reliable service in order to always better the needs of all users, private customers and business alike. So far, our organisation has been able to achieve a 72-hour mail delivery time, and is currently working towards achieving a 48-hour delivery target of all categories of mail, hence our decision to purchase twenty-five new mail delivery vans," he said.
He explained that NIPOST had concluded arrangements with a private firm, Galaxy Ltd, to provide internet communications, using V-SAT to 1500 post offices in the country in view of the competence of ICT in the current drive towards taking maximum advantage of all products that can be offered on-line, such as e-commerce, e-government and others, adding that as at today, more than fifty sites have been concluded.
He pointed out that NIPOST had renovated seven post offices in Bauchi territory alone, with new furniture provided to enhance the working environment of the organisation, adding that only recently, the contract for the complete renovation of the Bauchi Post Office building was awarded, while it promoted some of its staff for their outstanding performances.
He, however, noted with concern, the constraints facing the organisation, such as improper street numbering, non-payment of debt on services rendered by some state ministries, parastatals and local governments, as well as lack of patronage by people.
