The governor made the call yesterday during the launch of the pest control campaign at the Maiduguri International Airport. Governor Ali Sheriff, who was disturbed at the rate quella-birds and other pests were destroying farmlands in the two states, thanked the federal government for giving out an aircraft for the control of quella-birds and other pests in Borno and Yobe State.

He said the government was determined to boost the agricultural sector, and that every thing possible would be done to assist farmers in controlling the menace of quella-birds in the state, stressing that the destruction of farmlands by quella-birds in Borno and Yobe is a source of concern to the two governments because the two states are the most affected in the northern part of the country.

Addressing the gathering, the Minister for Agriculture, Abba Sayyid Ruma, who was represented by Mr. John Waziri, a director in the ministry, said that the federal government was aware of farmland destruction by pests in the two states and that government was doing everything possible to curb the menace of quella-birds in the two states and the North in general.

The minister said that apart from the aircraft given for aerial spray of chemical, more assistance would be offered by the federal government.
