Alex Boraine, From Methodist Preacher to Democracy Entrepreneur

Alex Boraine, 87, who died on December 7, was a Methodist leader and the deputy chairperson and co-founder of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) established in 1996 to help South Africa heal from the wounds of apartheid. His life was devoted to creating institutions aimed at advancing democracy which include the Institute for Democracy in South Africa. He was also the chairperson of the TRC in Mauritius.
