Climate Crisis Worsening Sudan Instability and Impacting Women

The continuing conflict in Sudan, entrenched in global geopolitics and the historical legacy of the previous leadership of now-deposed President Omar al-Bashir, is increasingly being attributed to the climate emergency.
The UN says about 65% of land in Sudan is affected by desertification, and NGO Practical Action orking in Sudan's North Darfur State says human activities, like the more than 7 million who are fleeing fighting in the country, have taken a toll on natural resources and ecosystems, intensifying environmental degradation.

In a July interview, AllAfrica's Melody Chirondo spoke with Angela Githitho-Muriithi, Director of East and Southern Africa at Plan International, to discuss the impact of climate change and the unique struggles faced by Sudanese women and the imperative for achieving gender equality.
