Will Africa Get the Renewable Energy Transition It Deserves?

allAfrica's Juanita Williams finds out how Joshua Volz, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Europe, Eurasia, Africa, Middle East in the US Department of Energy and his department mean to partner with Africa's leaders, the importance of the Lobito Corridor, and moving towards a model where decarbonisation and energy access are both priorities.

Volz is in Cape Town for Africa Energy Week, and his first stop was the Critical Minerals Africa 2023.

According to South Africa's Minister for Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, Africa can produce more energy than it requires within the next 30 years if it takes advantage of its natural resources.

Meanwhile, former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo urged developed economies to work towards the Just Energy Transition (JET) process - the transition towards a sustainable, low carbon and equitable energy system which is better for people and the planet - by making it just and fair to Nigeria and other African countries who aim to develop their economies and infrastructure.

Also at African Energy Week, Obasanjo said developed nations used oil and gas to attain their development aspirations and turned back to condemn others after achieving their targets.
