Over 50 Million Lives Saved Through Immunizations in Africa

New research reveals that vaccines have saved over 50 million lives in Africa over the last 50 years, with an average of nearly 60 years of life saved for each death prevented.

Spearheaded by the World Health Organization's (WHO) Expanded Programme on Immunisation launched in 1974, the initiative initially provided six vaccines and now offers 13, supported by the UN and Gavi. Notable successes include a substantial reduction in measles deaths, sharp declines in meningitis fatalities, and maternal and neonatal tetanus cases. The continent was declared free of indigenous wild poliovirus in 2022.
