Junta Leader Déby Eyes Grip On Power in Chad's Presidential Polls

Analysts say the country's Transitional President Mahamat Idriss Deby, who seized power in 2021 following the death of his father, long-term ruler Idris Deby, is most likely to win. But his chief opponent, Chad's current Prime Minister Succes Masra has also been drawing larger-than-expected crowds on the campaign trail. Critics accused Masra of being in a secret deal with the ruling military junta.

Deby has promised to bolster security and strengthen the rule of law. The vote coincides with the withdrawal of US troops, an important Western ally in the region.

Provisional results are expected by 21 May.
